It’s hard to believe that almost 40 years have passed since the word “Camry”, the English translation of the Japanese word “crown”, was first applied to a Toyota vehicle. In that time, the Toyota Camry has seen a few body style changes and plenty of once-a-generation innovation and design, culminating in a midsize sedan that’s become one of the world’s top-selling automobiles.

The Toyota Camry you’ll see and test drive when you visit Keith Pierson Toyota looks much different than the Toyota Camry that launched in 1980. The 1980 version was a narrow-body four-door sedan dubbed the “Toyota Celica Camry”, notable for its T-bar grille and long front end. In 1982 the “Celica” name was dropped and the Toyota Camry stood alone for the first time, a four-door “notchback” sedan (typically defined by a short rear end) that became the first Toyota Camry shipped from Japan to the North American market. Sales commenced in January 1983, and in just two years 128,000 units were sold.

A few years later, the second-generation Toyota Camry was produced by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, the Toyota brand’s first wholly-owned American plant. Then came the game-changing third generation, the model whose design introduced the longer body, stylish curves, and rounded surfaces that we see in today’s Toyota Camry models. This philosophy was further confirmed in the 2007 Toyota Camry, which launched at the 2006 North American Auto Show and was the first Toyota Camry model to feature a hybrid powertrain.

The eighth-generation Toyota Camry, unveiled this past January, will hit Toyota dealerships nationwide later in 2017. Expect this sedan and other appealing Toyota vehicles such as a 2017 Toyota Tacoma to solidify the Toyota brand as one of the world’s best!
