Many Toyota drivers in Jacksonville, FL are familiar with the big numbers pasted on each pump handle at the local gas station, and some might even know that the number represents the gasoline octane rating. But how many understand the difference between each rating? The average driver usually just chooses a gasoline depending on the type of car he/she drives.
The biggest question from a budget and vehicle performance standpoint: “Is there a huge difference between regular gasoline and premium gasoline?” If you fill up your Toyota RAV4 near St. Augustine, FL with plus or premium fuel, will it perform any better? It’s a fact that premium gasoline, given its higher octane rating, burns more efficiently in your car engine’s combustion chamber, and thus offers slightly better fuel economy.
However, the sizable cost difference between regular and premium isn’t worth the one or two extra miles you might get on the highway. And that’s assuming you own a luxury car with a high-compression or turbocharged engine, something specially designed to work with plus or premium fuel. If you do own a vehicle (i.e. a Toyota RAV4) that runs on regular gasoline, there’s no benefit to using plus/premium fuel. Your SUV won’t get better fuel economy and it won’t perform any better.
In the “old days”, the difference between regular and premium gasoline was more pronounced, because there was a wider gap between high-end engines and regular engines. Premium gasoline helped protect against “engine knock”, which hampers an engine’s performance. However, most 21st-century engines are sophisticated enough to negate the effects of engine knock, thus narrowing the gap between different octane levels and their relative performance in a given automobile.
